The year is half over, y’all! Holy cow!
THE QUEEREST THING I WATCHED THIS WEEK
Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home literally couldn’t be queerer.
FILM
NEW ON STREAMING
Hit Man (Netflix)
You can tune in to the next episode of Agree to Disagree to hear lots of detail, but I really did not like this movie. It was boring, it made no sense, and it’s only saving grace was how Glen Powell is both hot and talented. 3/10. Queer Factor: 0/7.
IN THEATERS
A Quiet Place: Day One
This is a prequel to the previous two films, and it not only does it hold up to the original, it surpasses it in some ways. I thought this would be a case of diminishing returns, but the script, action, and performances take it to a place I was not expecting and I was a bit emotional at the end of the film. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn give beautiful performances in a film that is surprising, tense, heartfelt, and beautiful. And in case you’re wondering: the cat lives. 9/10. Queer Factor: 0/7.
TELEVISION
COMPLETE SEASONS
Queenie (Hulu), Season 1
I can’t recommend this series enough. It follows Queenie (Dionne Brown), a Black British woman, as she navigates a quarter life crisis. She is newly single, running into difficulties at work, struggling with her friend group, and dealing with family trauma. She does all of this clumsily, but Brown’s performance is extraordinary and endearing, and there’s more than enough humor to go around. Her grandmother, Veronica (Llewella Gideon), is particularly funny and charming and has an arc of her own as a Jamaican immigrant doing her best for her family. Do yourself a favor and watch this show. 10/10. Queer Factor: 1/7.
Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home (available on MAX)
This is the follow up to Trixie’s show last year, which chronicled her and her partner David as they renovated a Palm Springs motel to make it the kitschy fever dream that it turned out to be. In this four-episode season, they renovate their new home in Hollywood, taking a beautiful old house and making it perfect for them. It’s over the top and wonderful and also their designer, Dan Vickery, is one of the most beautiful men I’ve ever seen. It’s fun and has a ton of special guests, like Orville Peck, Nicole Byer, and Katya, and it’s just a great gay old time. 9/10. Queer Factor: 7/7.
